JOB TITLE: FIBER OPTIC CABLE SPLICER*
* Formerly referred to as COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS CABLE SPLICER
Praxis Associates, Inc., a fiber optic engineering and construction firm, has an immediate need for a Communication Systems Cable Splicer for the Digital 395 Middle Mile Fiber-Optic Network and Infrastructure Project.
LOCATION: Eastern Sierra
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Splices fiber optic cables in both outdoor and indoor settings. Reads, creates and maintains splicing schematics and diagrams. This role is also responsible for taking and maintaining accurate splicing and field notes and to support project timelines. Also this role is an integral player during design and inspection, and finalizes job summary sheets.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Splice fiber optic cables for both loose tube and ribbon optic cables
- Constructs proper splice cases, including but not limited to: grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing
- Prepares and maintains splicing records, schematics and diagrams
- Builds graphical worksheets for contractor use; uses drafting technique in Visio and other required programs
- Performs work in accordance with industry standards
- Reviews and interprets underground and aerial cable records in existing records, on maps or in the field
- Makes precise recommendations for changes in running fiber optic cables, or provides input into construction methodologies
- Participates in engineering, permit and construction processes
REQUIRMENTS:
- At least 2 years of basic construction and/or telecom systems installation
- Experience on how to fuse both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables
- Able to place a mid-sheath splice
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Working knowledge of all factory fusion splicing machines
- Pays close attention to detail and makes sound decisions based on information given
- Capacity to multitask and stay organized under pressure

JOB TITLE: OUTSIDE PLANT TECHNICIAN—PLACEMENT CREWS*

Praxis Associates, Inc., a fiber optic engineering and construction firm, has an immediate need for Communication Systems Installers for the Digital 395 Middle Mile Fiber-Optic Network and Infrastructure Project.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Communication Systems Installer works on a Cable Placement Crew with three to seven operatives to install fiber optic cable into conduit.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
May perform any or all of the following tasks:
- Sets up and operates fiber optic cable blowing machine.
- Operates Air Compressor connected to fiber optic cable blowing machine.
- Assists with cable feed into fiber optic cable blowing machine, monitors operation to assure that there is sufficient slack to minimize resistance as cable is blown into conduit.
- Sets up and operates fiber optic cable pulling machine.
- Drives F150 or F350 (or equivalent sized trucks) which pull reel or equipment trailers.
- Uses communications equipment to assure coordination of crew operations that may span more than two miles per set-up.
In addition, each crew has one lead person charged with the following duties:
- Oversees the layout and set-up of worksite.
- Assures adherence to safety policies and practices.
- Notifies permitting agencies (e.g., CalTrans) of planned work locations or potential work locations a week in advance.
- Keeps accurate daily records of productions results.
- Assures that fiber optic cable is protected from damage.
- Is continuously oriented to achievement of production quotas.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Two years general construction experience, preferably handling/placing fiber optic cable
- Basic math skills
- Communication skills
- Able to lift up to 100 lbs.
- Good work ethic and diligence regarding safety policies and practices
- Lead person should have two years’ prior experience as foreman in telecommunications construction.

JOB TITLE: COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN
Praxis Associates, Inc., a fiber optic engineering and construction firm, has an immediate need for a Communication Systems Technician for the Digital 395 Middle Mile Fiber-Optic Network and Infrastructure Project.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Communication Systems Technician provisions buildings with the equipment and connectivity required for access to the fiber optic network.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Installs pre-assembled backboard with network electronics inside buildings
- Records and tracks network interface device serial number for purpose of inventory management
- Runs jumpers to provide connectivity inside facility
- Places drop wire connecting facility with fiber access point
- Performs terminal splicing operation
- Utilizes test equipment for the purpose of troubleshooting and verifying the integrity of circuits
- Uses hand tools to assemble and install data communication lines
- May provision fiber optic network nodes by terminating main control panels, racks and other equipment; performs tests on all circuits from field devices to the main control panels and/or equipment
- May include assisting with conduit placement at customer facility
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Three to five years’ experience in telecommunications, provisioning facilities with fiber optic services
- Knowledgeable in standards for placing low voltage wiring
- Good communication skills to manage interactions with customers
- Able to work independently
- Diligent in accomplishing firm and challenging production standards
- Previous experience in communication systems cable splicing a plus
